During the early to mid 1950s, the North American F-86 Sabre Jet was the mainstay of USAF fighter operations round the world. Several other nations used this type as well, including Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan.

During the late 1940s, the Sabre was put through it's testing phase at remote air bases such as Edwards Air Force Base in the Southern California desert. One test flight was recorded to film at the time. It was taken out of archives and used in a documentary programme aired on the History Channel International. Whilst enjoying this story, I noted an amorphous white object passing by in the distance as the jet was roaring down the airstrip on takeoff.

At first, it occurred to me that the object might be the Moon in daylight. But I discarded that option. There is some possibility that this is a passing aircraft, but in situations when a new type is being tested, the airspace is cleared in the area of the test for safety reasons. There is often a "chase plane" used to accompany the test plane, but it will travel in the same direction as the test plane.

This is the exact aircraft we see in the sequence to come.

F-86 Sabre Jet Taking Off From Edwards AFB during a test of the prototype. This GIF is the original created in early 2003. At that time, I thought the white object to be an unknown. I am now convinced that the object in the circle is a distant cloud over the mountains. However...there is another object in this bit of film which knocked me right out of my chair!

I was quite shocked to run across this object hovering for only an instant over the airstrip where the F-86 was taking off. I failed to notice it when making the first series of still shots for the animated GIF seen above, as it only appears in TWO frames of the film clip. I was doing some new still frames for book I was working on for a publisher in Japan, when this object turned up. Notice that the shadowing on the object exactly coincides with the shadowing on the jet in the segment. Sure looks like a classic "flying saucer" as so often reported during the times in which this film was shot, in the late 1940s. Truly amazing is what I call it.

As can be seen in this animation, the object bursts into existence, and fades out. This proves that the anomaly is NOT a film flaw, or problem caused in the developing process.

This animation is a bit faster, but far from normal speed. At regular rate, the object is not even visible. Being on only two frames, when embedded in a film clip running at 24 frames per second, or at NTSC tel

evision rate of 29.97 fps, this thing is too fast for the human eye. Isn't is wierd that the anomaly apears and fades away in only two frames? NOTHING man-made can do that today, let alone in the late 1940s!

This is a 200% blow-up of only clear frame with the anomaly. This object displays STRUCTURE! One can even make out a circle, or ring, around the very botton of this thing. Could this REALLY be what used to be called a "Flying Saucer"?

At the end of the day, it's up to YOU to draw your own conclusions.
