incident took place on the night of Saturday 21 May, 1977. Some of my friends,
and I, had made plans to go camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We were
a group of four. When we finally completed packing up the car, it was getting
late, and the Sun was nearing the horizon. Our destination was a remote
little valley north of Placerville, California. Parking was on a ridge top,
with a half mile hike down to the stream known as Rock Creek. At the foot
of the trail was a nice pond with a perfect flat area for pitching tents.
I had been to this place before, a year earlier. When we arrived, it was
late evening and pitch dark. We decided to camp that night on the ridge,
and hike down to the pond the next morning.
Our tents set up, we all decided to turn in and make an early start in the morning. Soon after lights out, we heard movements in the bush like a large animal stomping about. Needless to say, we were all scared. Everyone knows that there are bkack bears in the region, and they can be dangerous. My friend Ron was the only one among us who was more curious than afraid. As a group, the four of us emerged from our tents and moved slowly toward the sounds in the bush. Ron in the lead with a bright acetylene lamp, we all saw a pair of eyes reflecting back from the darkened trees. This pair of eyes was at least 8 feet above the ground; too big for the usual black bear. There was also a powerful bad smell in the air. Bears aren’t known for giving off such a stench. Now we were really nervous! We retreated to our campsite, and in spite of the late hour, built a fire. After a time sitting round the fire convincing ourselves that all was well, we once again went to bed, leaving the fire burning. Sometime later, after the fire had burnt itself out, we were awakened by the sounds of something big grunting, and thrashing about in the bush…again. Well,
that was enough for us! Deciding that discretion was the better part of
valour, we broke camp, threw the stuff into the car, and hightailed it
out of there back to Sacramento. I am convinced to this day that this
was an encounter with the creature known as Bigfoot. Those close set eyes,
so far above the forest floor left a lasting impression. © 2007 Jeff Challender
